Mike Lyons

Mike Lyon is an artist who we looked at as inspiration for our movement drawings, as we had an idea of converting the linear movement drawings from our sketch books into vector files and draw repeatedly using the vinyl cutter, with a pen in instead of a blade.  We like the concept of this idea, but soon realised that the layers of the drawings would be too difficult to transfer into vector files, so progressed our ideas onto screen printing.

Mike Lyon is an American artist with an education in Architecture, Fine Art and Painting. He works on mostly large scale and uses woodcut printing as his main tool.

He has been experimenting with other ways of creating a similar
effect, by using technology to create large scale drawings and this example of a paper doll is very inspirational to me, as it relates back to my work with the vinyl cutter and the experimentation with pens in different colours and styles. I appreciate the idea of repetition and the thought process that went alongside this design.


The Beach Museum of Art commissioned Lyons to produce this collection of prints to go alongside his exhibition. The brief stated the prints to be family friendly and no larger than 10 x 15 inches.
